Fallen Idol: Katie Stevens (American Idol Exit Interview)

At 17 years old, the bilingual songstress stole the hearts of Americans when we met her during the auditions process in Boston.  Her unique connection with her grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's, her warm personality, and her slamming vocals skyrocketed this Connecticut native to the Top 10 of season 9.

The judge railed on Stevens for not finding a relevant sound; however, last week, overall the judges were really impressed with her rendition of "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" by Elvis Presley.  Check out what the judges said:

  • Kara DioGuardi:  "Katie, I think you showed us judges!  Good job."
  • Randy Jackson:  "Nice vocals; I liked it.  I was entertained."
  • Simon Cowell:  "I found it very loud and a bit annoying."
  • Ellen DeGeneres:  "That was a very horny song -- there were a lot of horns in it."

Over the past eight weeks, the shy high school student has immerged into a strong confident performer who will without a doubt light up the American Idol (TV) summer tour kicking off in June.  In a recent press interview, Katie Stevens talks about mentor Adam Lambert, the emotional roller coaster of Idol, her prom plans, and a message to her fans.

Adam Lambert was the mentor this week.  What piece of advice that he gave you are you going to take with you?

He told me to always stick to what I love and what I believe in.  It was great to have him as a mentor because he’s been through the Idol process, so he was able to give us feedback on what he did and how he was able to evolve throughout all of the pressures and everything, so it really helped us kind of try to hone into that and do the best that we can.

What for you has been the most difficult aspect of being on Idol?

I think the most difficult thing was each contestant, we go out there and we try to do our best each week.  It’s just very hard knowing that you’re going to be judged afterwards, because you don’t know what to expect.  You don’t know if they’re going to give you good comments or bad comments.  So you’ve just got to try to manage your nerves as best you can, because I think the singing part was probably easiest, but it was nerve wracking going into the judging part of it, so definitely the judging was most difficult for me.

Each week during the elimination episodes you were always really emotional.  Can you talk a little bit about the relationship that you formed with the other contestants?

I was very emotional because we are like a family and it’s not a competitive environment.  Everyone is so supportive of each other, so it’s really, really difficult to see people that you love leave.  I think that it was harder towards the top 24 and with Lacey and Paige because they’re not going on tour with us.  So I mean it’s kind of like you don’t know when you’re going to see them, but I think that I got less emotional saying goodbye to the people that were in the top 10 because I’m going to see them and spend so much time with them over the summer, so it’s kind of like a see you later rather than a goodbye.  We’re all really close and I think that’s ultimately why I got so emotional.

If you had made it to next week and got to pick kind of an inspirational song were you already starting to think about what you had in mind?

I definitely was.  "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was definitely a song that I’ve wanted to sing for the entire competition.  I had never found the right time to do it, so I would have done that, but I mean I know that I’m going to have plenty of opportunities to sing for America again, so hopefully at some point I could be singing that song.

Is it back to school as a teenager?  Do you get to go to prom?  Did you pick a date?

I actually don’t think I will be able to attend prom or graduation because that’s when tour rehearsals will start.  But definitely, I’m going to go back home; hang out with my friends; keep up with school so that I can graduate and get my diploma.  But I’m really looking forward to the tour and, hopefully, after that writing an album.  We’ll see how it goes.  I’m excited for what’s to come.

Closing Remarks.

I just want to say thank you for everybody who has supported me throughout all of this, because it was an incredible journey and I’m so honored to be one of the nine and in the top ten and be able to go on tour.  So hopefully I’ll see all of you.  Thank you for all of your support.
