Fallen Idol: Todrick Hall (American Idol Exit Interview)

Todrick Hall inspired judges and audiences members on American Idol (TV) with his creative performances, his high energy, and his professional choreography.  During his Idol journey, he took on Kelly Clarkson, Tina Turner, and Queen; however, last week America voted him off a week shy of making the Top 12.  Overall, the judges really liked Hall, but they felt that his voice would be better suited for Broadway.  Check out what the judges had to say about his latest performance:

  • Kara DioGuardi:  "You can't listen to that and say it wasn't good singing."
  • Randy Jackson:  "That was one of the best vocals of the night and season."
  • Simon Cowell:  "What you've done tonight is tell us who you are."
  • Ellen DeGeneres:  "You're a brave, brave young man.  You did a good job."

This isn't the end of the road for Hall, who is making it his own personal goal to land a role on the FOX hit show Glee (TV).  The theatrical singer would be a lock for this show, if they were hiring.  In a recent press call Todrick Hall talks about what went wrong during his Queen performance, his BFF on the show, and his plans for Glee!

Can you talk about the experience of getting to know people and who you are going to miss the most?

Well, in all honesty my best friend was Jose Munoz.  He was the first guy that I met when I was there and I took him to see The Color Purple with me.  He hadn’t really seen hardly any Broadway musicals.  So I was probably the closest to him and to Alex Lambert because Alex was my roommate.  And those are probably the two people that I’m going to miss the most from the show.

What do you think went wrong after having such a great performance?

Well, you know, I feel like I should have done that a couple of weeks earlier.  The problem is, I’m an African American male, as you all could tell from watching me on TV and a lot of people expected me to sing, you know, I got so many messages saying sing Usher, sing Chris Brown, sing Ne-Yo, Brian McKnight, Stevie Wonder; any Black artist basically that you can sing because that’s your demographic.

But that’s not the kind of music that I want to sing.  So, I’m happy that I stayed true to myself, but I kind of sadly feel that if I had just sung the cookie cutter songs that people would have expected me to do and not gone so far out there with the clothes and the performing and just been a normal guy that got up there and sang semi-decent, you know, I feel like I would have maybe done better, but I’m happy that I stayed true to myself because I think that’s the most important and I would have not been happy doing that.

If you had the opportunity to sing any song, what would you have chosen?

I wanted to sing "Black and Gold," which is on the Fame (2009) movie.  I love that song and I wanted to dance and do everything I wanted to do with that song, but it didn’t fit any of the criteria for the category so, unfortunately I couldn’t do that.

What are your future plans?

Well, listen, I’m making it my personal job now to be my own campaign manager to get myself a role on Glee (TV).  I think I would be perfect for that show and so every time somebody asks me what I’m doing now I’m just telling everyone that I would love, love, love to be the next cast member on Glee (TV).

And I didn’t even think about campaigning for that until they said the other night, Simon said, "Well, you look like you are doing American Idol the musical."  And then Randy chimed in and said, "Glee."  And I was like, actually, I think I would love to be on Glee (TV).  It’s the perfect show for me and that’s the reason I came on American Idol (TV)  to hopefully take this platform and do something else with it.

Closing Remarks.

I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me, all the fans for voting for me, and everybody just whenever you hear something about Glee (TV), mention my name and do whatever they can do to help me get on the show or get an audition because I really want to do that and I think I’ll do American Idol (TV) and Fox proud if they give me a chance to be on there, and the theater community.
