Fallen Idol: Jermaine Sellers (American Idol Exit Interview)

Jermaine Seller began his Top 24 American Idol (TV) journey with a little help from Oleta Adams.  The singer picked "Get Here" to perform and the judges were split.  Seller was definitely vibing with Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" when he took the Idol stage last week.  Check out what the judges had to say about his performance:

  • Kara DioGuardi:  "You can do all these things which is impressive."
  • Randy Jackson:  "It was definitely better than last week."
  • Simon Cowell:  "Just you and the piano would work."
  • Ellen DeGeneres:  "I love your style and I like that you rock a onesie."

The church singer from Joliet, Illinois got America's attention with his soulful sound that sent chills throughout your body.  During Hollywood week, Seller stood out among the crowd and when he was put through to the next round, he handpicked each song carefully.  During a recent press call Jermaine Seller talked about his favorite part about being on American Idol (TV), the funniest thing that happened to him, and his plans for the future.

What has been your favorite part of this whole experience?

The best part about it is just being there, being in that line first with 15,000 people, and meeting so many different people, just different personalities, and people from different states.  It’s just the people and then making it to the top 20.  It’s a blessing.  That’s the best experience about it, just getting on that platform and being able to, not just sing to people, but to minister to them, too.

Like people don’t realize that the reason why I sang songs like Alida Adams and Marvin Gaye "What’s Going On?," half of the reason why I did "What’s Going On?" right then and there at that time was because I felt like we’re not paying attention to what’s going on as far as Haiti, as far as Chile.  We’re not paying attention to it.  We’re spending time focusing on other stuff when we should be focusing on what’s actually going on in the world right now.

Were there any really funny moments that you can tell us about?

I would have to say the funniest moment is group night, every night with those songs.  Because the choreography and all of us having two left feet, that’s the funniest moment, honestly.  Like just going out there and then trying to remember how to park and bark and block in the right place.  Honestly, that’s the best moment.

What kind of artist do you see yourself being?

I see myself being a contemporary artist.  My style is very much that what BeBe and Cece Winans were years and years ago, how they sang songs like "Heaven" and "I’m Lost Without You," and it still was marketable to where you would see it on MTV or you would see it on BET.  You would see it on basically, a show that doesn’t just show gospel stuff.  It also shows R&B stuff.  It’s that crossover market.

Closing Remarks?

I want to thank all of you for the support.  If I could say anything, as far as experience for American Idol (TV) to the younger people that are out there that are going to try out, know this, that the sky’s the limit.  And just because you only go so far with your career or whatever, once you get to that platform you know that God has a purpose.  Everything lasts in seasons.  And you got to keep struggling and you got to keep striving.  And the longer that you struggle, you’ve got to realize that there is reward at the end.  There is a reward at the end.  And keep your head to the sky.
