Fallen Idol: Michelle Delamor (American Idol Exit Interview)

Michelle Delamor's American Idol (TV) journey began when she took the stage in front of millions watching at home and performed Alicia Keys' "Fallin'."  The judges seemed to be split, but when she returned the next week with Creed's "With Arms Wide Open," they all seemed to love it.  Check out what the judges had to say:

  • Kara DioGuardi:  "My favorite performance of yours ever."
  • Randy Jackson:  "You just didn't do enough with it."
  • Simon Cowell:  "You took our pointers and attempted to make it your own."
  • Ellen DeGeneres:  "I think you did do a lot with the song."

Sadly for the fashion guru, America sent her packing, but don't think that just because she was kicked off Idol, that means she is leaving L.A.!  In a recent press call, fallen Idol Michelle Delamor spoke about her favorite moment on Idol, she defended her Creed song choice, and talks about her future plans to stay in L.A.

What was your favorite moment about your time on Idol?

You know what, working with Dorian.  I’m sure you don’t recognize his name, but he worked with Michael Jackson.  And if you saw This is It.  He’s in the film.  And I was like if I -- I watched the film five times.  And Michael Jackson’s my idol.  He’s my inspiration.  And so I watched it about five times and I was like one day when I become successful, I just pray to God that I’m able to work with this man.  And when I walked into the room and I saw him there like I just started crying.  I got so emotional because I felt like oh, my God, a dream of mine just came true.  Like this is as close as I’ll ever get to Michael and he really like, he really helped take me to the next level.  And that to me was the highlight of the whole Idol experience.

How did you get comfortable from week one to week two?

The first week, just knowing that you’re going to step on that stage, like, I’ve watched every single season of American Idol (TV).  And when we first walked into the room where the stage is and I saw the lights, I was like oh, my God, like is this for real?  Everything I’ve ever watched for like the past eight years, I’m about to step on that stage and make it happen.  So there were nerves, but it was so much excitement and the adrenaline rush.  And I was driven mostly by that.  And I was very confident in my song choice.  So I was more excited than anything.  The second week, I was a little bit unsure of my song choice and I think that that’s what came through.  And that’s why you saw the difference in one performance to the next.

When you picked the Creed song initially, what was your thought process?

Well, after my first performance, you know I had done Alicia Keys and the judges all thought I needed to take a risk and do something that they wouldn’t expect me to do.  So that’s why I chose to do Creed because I knew they wouldn’t expect that.  It’s kind of like a rock ballad and I’m not a rock singer.

I thought it was taking a risk and I believe that I kind of tried too much to go by what the judges said.  I just wanted to make sure that I did the right thing and I was too caught up in my mind and I should have, more than anything, just stayed true to who I am as an artist.  And I feel that I still did give my own style to it, but I maybe should have chosen a different song.  But everything happens for a reason.

What song where you planning on doing next?

I wanted to do "Come Together" by The Beatles, but Michael Jackson style.

Can you talk about wardrobe on set of Idol, plus is it true that you design and make clothes?

First, the beginning stages, every episode where I was, you dress yourself completely, like you buy your own clothes.  You dress yourself completely.  Yes, it was whatever I chose to wear I kind of put it together.  And my sister and I, we went shopping together.  I am really big in fashion.  That’s why, I guess, some of the things were a little out there.  I love fashion, and I got so excited when Vera Wang was in the audience.  I was like oh, my God.  Because she’s amazing.  And yes, I am going to start working on my clothing line.  I want to get that together.  Yes, just like glam funk kind of clothing.

What are your plans after Idol?

I’m actually staying in L.A.  I’m going to do everything that I can to make something big come out of this.  I feel like I’ve come this far and I know that I was made to do something big with music so I’m not going to give up and you guys will see me one day doing something big, I promise.

Closing Remarks?

Well, I’d like to thank everybody so, so, so much for supporting me.  I know Miami has been a huge support, but all of America and all the people watching, and even the people that didn’t vote, this was my biggest dream to sing in front of millions of people and I got to do that.  And I know I’m going to go forth and continue to do that.  And I’m just so grateful.  This experience has taught me so much and I’m so blessed to have gotten this far.  And I can only go up from here.  And I promise you guys will see me at the Grammys sometime soon.  I will make it.  So thank you, guys, for the support.  I’m so grateful.  I’m so blessed.  And that’s really it.  I love you, guys.
