Fallen Idol: Joe Munoz (American Idol Exit Interview)

Somewhat hidden through the American Idol (TV) audition process, Joe Munoz was not featured as much as other contestants, which some say might have hurt his overall chances.  That didn’t seem to bother the always cheerful Joe who wowed judges but fell short of wining America's heart.

Debuting on the Idol stage, Munoz sang You And I Both from his Idol Jason Mraz, and overall the judges really seemed to like it.  Check out what the judges had to say:

  • Kara DioGuardi:  "In terms of singing, I think you've been the best."
  • Randy Jackson:  "Think you did a good job with it, dawg."
  • Simon Cowell:  "It was okay and safe."
  • Ellen DeGeneres:  "You are so comfortable on stage."

In a recent press conference, PopStar was on the line along with other media outlets who talked to Joe about his Idol inspiration, dreaded regrets, and his future in pop music.

What inspired you to audition for American Idol?

I’ve just been passionate about music since I’ve been a little kid.  It’s always something I feel I’ve been good at, and I just love music.  The love that I have for music is what basically drew me into American Idol.

When you were standing up there with Tim, did you have any idea that it was going to be you?

A lot of things were going through my mind, honestly, but I was just trying to keep calm and -- it’s so unpredictable, you don’t really know who’s going to go home, so I didn’t want to get over confident.  But that’s basically what happened last night.

I was wondering if you thought your lack of screen time hurt you at all.

I don’t think so, because other people didn’t get screen time at all and then they got through.  I just think -- I don’t know, I try not to think about it that much.  I just did the best I could and I was really proud of what I did.  And even though the outcome wasn’t the best for me, I have faith that things will get better after this.

What you would do differently if you had a chance to do this over again?

I don’t think I would do anything different.  I’ve been really comfortable with all the decisions I’ve made and I’m pretty happy with what I did, and I’m pretty proud of myself.

Where do you see yourself going from here?  Are you committed to a career in music, and if so, how do you want to pursue that?  What is your sound, do you think?

I really love pop music, so I’m just a pop guy, and I see myself doing a pop record.  Also, there’s a lot of artists doing a lot of things right now, so I really want to be that kind of artist, just being in musical theater, on TV, and make records for people.
