Recap: Battlestar Galactica 4.20: "Daybreak, Part II" - 2 of 2

We left off with Battlestar Galactica having just jumped back to Earth.  If you missed the first part, you can read it here.  It's worth noting that it's "our Earth" - not the Earth they jumped to earlier in the season.  Twelve hours have passed and the scene opens to a beautiful view of Earth's oceans with some light, fluffy clouds overhead and the fleet ships starting to jump in.  A transport leaves for the surface where they see a lush, green planet...

Admiral Adama, Lieutenant Hoshi, Saul Tigh, Dr. Cottle, and Gaius Baltar are on the planet.  They are scouting out the local inhabitants.  Baltar passes a pair of binoculars to the Adama and says, "Well, there you have it, Admiral, the most advanced civilization we could locate on this planet.  I can't see them talking to each other so either they communicate in a different way, or they're preverbal.  Judging by the look of their tools, which are rudimentary to say the least, I'd suggest that we found an early, ritualistic tribal society."

Cottle:  "They bury their dead.  I came across a grave a couple of clicks back and ran some tests.  Their DNA is compatible with ours."

Baltar:  "Meaning we can breed with them."

Admiral:  "You've got a one-track mind, Doc."

Baltar:  "Well, listen, I'm talking about the survivial of the human race, actually, not some get-together with the natives."

Admiral:  "You also have no sense of humor."

Baltar:  "Right.  Right, I'm sorry."

Admiral:  "How is that possible?  Human beings, naturally evolved, on a planet one million light years away?  The odds against that are..."

Baltar:  "Astronomical, yeah.  One might even say there was a divine hand at work."

Admiral:  "Well, whoever's responsible, we're here.  And here's where we're gonna say, with our new families."

And there you have it; the divine plan comes full circle.  One of tThe first thing they do is set up a command post.  Lee proposes they put everything they own behind them and start over with nothing but the clohes on their backs in an attempt to break the cycle.  He thinks they should make friends with the natives, teach them language, and give them the best parts of humanity and leave the rest behind.

William Adama lays out a plan to land civilians at various points around the planet with an objective to spread the people out as much as possible to increase their chances of survival.  Everyone will receive equal provisions and documents of where all of the other camps are located.  The 6's, 8's, and 2's all decide to stay.  Ellen tells them, "We'll give the Baseship to the Centurians, let them find their own destiny.  They've earned their freedom."

Baltar:  "And if they evolve and come back?"

Adama:  "Setting them free is a risk worth taking."  Adama tells them that Sam will take the fleet and guide it directly into the sun, effectively destroying any technology they have.  Kara says her goodbyes to Sam.  She kisses him one last time and tells him she loves him.

Sam:  "I'll see you on the other side."

The ship is empty and we hear "Adama's Song" in the background.  He's geared up to fly the last viper out of the hanger deck.  He starts to relive some of his memories.  He takes a lie detector test.  After a few questions, he says "enough of this crap.  I'd rather spend the rest of my years in a broken down ship than sit here and have someone question my word."  Apparently he was up for a promotion.

Sam takes the fleet away from the planet.  Adama flies to the surface.

Back on the planet, Galen talks to Ellen and Saul.  He decides to live by himself on an isolated island.  Ellen hugs him.  Saul wishes him luck.  Saul tells him that if what happened to Cally had happened to Ellen, he would have done "the same frakkin thing."  And Galen walks away into the distance.

Saul and Ellen relive a moment in the bar where their love is so pure and true.  Roslin is growing more sick; she sits with Adama holding hands.  She says, "This is a very beautiful world.  Does it have a name?"

Adama:  "Earth."

She laughs.  "It's not Earth."

Adama:  "Earth is a dream.  One we've been chasing for a long time.  We've earned it.  This is Earth."

Roslin:  "Okay, then.  Earth."  She laughs again, "That's fine."

She has trouble breathing, something that becomes more acute as the moments pass.  The Admiral asks her if she would like to get a better look at the planet, to which she says yes.  He carries her to what is presumably the last raptor on the planet while Lee and Kara watch.

Lee:  "Dad?"

Adama:  "I don't have much time, son."

Lee:  "I understand."

They exchange hugs, he exchanges a hug and kiss with Kara, and it's assumed that's the last time they ever see each other.  As the raptor takes off, Roslin waves to the two of them.  They both wave back and smile.  It reminds Lee of a memory.  He tells Starbuck, "My very earliest memory of my father was him flying away in a big plane and wondering when he was coming back - he's not coming back this time."

Kara:  "No, he's not.  Neither am I."

Lee:  "Where are you going?"

Kara:  I don't know.  I just know that I am done here.  I've completed my journey and it feels good."

They relive memories together of the first time they met.  They had both gotten so wasted they almost made a huge mistake, but Kara's boyfriend, Lee's brother, wakes up and startles them in time for anything to happen.  They both feel really guilty; they exchange a few pleasantries and Lee leaves the apartment.

Back on Earth, they both just look so sad.

Kara:  "So what about you, what are you gonna do?  Today is the first day of the rest of your life, Lee."

Lee:  "Well I'm - I always thought when this was all done I would kick back, relax, spend the rest of my days doing the absolute minimum humanly possible."

Kara:  "And now that you're here?"

Lee:  "I want to explore, climb the mountains.  I want to cross the oceans - Gods, I can't believe I'm saying this; it sounds exhausting, I must be crazy."

He turns around and she's gone!  Just gone - and Lee is in a field all by himself.

He says to the open air:  "Goodbye, Kara - you won't be forgotten."  We see scenes of Lee in his apartment, waking up on his couch the day after meeting Kara for the first time.  The pigeon flies into his place again, looks at him for a minute, and flies away.

Next, memories of Laura's blind date.  She's in the bathroom looking in the mirror.  Shaun asks if she is okay.   Laura tells him it's been a lovely evening, really lovely, but that she won't be doing this again.  She asks him to leave.  She lights a cigarette, makes a phone call, and says she'll join the political campaign - which is what led her to the present moment.

In the raptor, they fly over the water and almost inaudibly Roslin says, "So much....life."

Adama:  "It's a rich continent.  More wildlife than all the twelve colonies put together."

And then she dies, so suddenly.  She just collapses in her seat, just like that.  He puts his wedding ring on her and holds her hand, kisses her.

"Right there, I'm gonna build it right there, Laura."  He's talking about the cabin of course.  He sets down.

Next, we see the Sun rising in the distance, people gathered together, walking.  And then we see Athena and Helo with their daughter, Hera.  They joke with each other about who is going to teach Hera to hunt.  Athena's convinced it will be her.

Hera runs off in the field while Caprica and Gaius look on. Baltar asks if she'll be okay.  Suddenly, Head Six and Head Baltar appear.  Head Six says, "She survived, thanks to you."  Head Baltar adds, "Both of you."

Caprica:  "And that's it?  That's all God wants of us?"

Head Six:  "God's plan is never complete."

Baltar:  "Great."

Head Baltar:  "But I think it's safe to say that from now your lives will be less...eventful."

Then the two disappear.  Baltar and Caprica Six hold hands and relive a memory back in the city.  She touches her face and points to two peaks in the distance and talks about living out the rest of his life with her.  Next, we see Bill Adama again, alone, having just buried Roslin, her grave covered in rocks.  He talks to her, about the Sun, the light, how heavenly the place is, how it reminds him of her.

And then we see Hera again, still playing in field when she suddenly looks up to the sky.  We get clips of many different environments on the planet surface, what seems like a long break, and suddenly the words "150,000 Years Later" appear!

We see a large city and hear a reporter in the background:  "At a scientific conference this week at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington the startling announcement was made that archaeologists believe they have found fossilized remains of a young woman who may actually be Mitochondrial Eve.  Mitochondrial Eve is the name scientists have given to the most recent common ancestor for all human beings now living on Earth.  She lived in what is now Tanzania over 150,000 years ago."

We then see Caprica and Baltar walking together, apparently angels like Baltar had been saying for some time, but to avoid confusion, we'll just refer to them as the "head versions."

Head Six:  "Along with their Cylon mother and human father.  Commercialism, decadence, technology run amuch, remind you of anything?"

Head Baltar:  "Take your pick.  Cobol, Earth, the real Earth, before this one, Caprica before the fall."

Head Six:  "All of this has happened before..."

Head Baltar:  "But the question remains, does all of this have to happen again?"

Head Six:  "This time I bet no."

Head Baltar:  "You know, I've never known you to play the optimist, why the change of heart?"

Head Six:  "Mathematics, law of averages.  Let a complex system repeat itself long enough and eventually something surprising might occur.  That too is in God's plan."

Head Baltar:  "You know he doesn't like that name."

And they walk down the street together.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll surely miss this series, and especially the incredible cast!  We still have Battlestar Galactica: The Plan to look forward to, but I really don't see how they could further this story given the ending it had.  And of course, Caprica should be a cool prequel, but given the time period, we will have a whole new cast of characters.
