If there's one thing we love to do, it's giving stuff away. Seriously, we've been doing it for so many years, we can't even recall why we ever started. Everything from CDs and DVDs to jewelry and perfumes to movie tickets and clothing. Sure, it costs us quite a lot every single month; prizes are often donated but we also purchase them ourselves, and we have always burdened the shipping costs, which can be quite high when you consider they are mailed all over the world. We average one prize for every day of the year, or thirty in any given month. That amounts to thousands of prizes in just the past three years alone. With a focus on celebrities, we've always had Jonas Brothers and Twilight merchandise, Miley Cyrus for the kids, and much more, always more. So what are you waiting for? In 2009, we launched a new service called MyStar Points -- free points you earn from participating on our suite of properties. Some points are easy to earn -- such as adding a favorite celebrity or television show to your profile, or even just logging in for the day. Some points require a small amount of work -- such as uploading celebrity profile photos or contributing celebrity Twitter account usernames. Others still require even more work -- writing fan mail letters, posting news, creating celebrity biographies, contributing movie reviews or television show recaps. No doubt, there are plenty of ways to contribute and typically the more challenging the task, the more points we reward, but the simple tasks can usually be repeated and add up in a short period of time. Prior to this year, we had individual contests that focused on specific subjects -- Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana merchandise, Twilight merchandise, Harry Potter merchandise -- and winners would be randomly selected without any assurance that they could win a specific prize that they may have wanted. That's why we created MyStar Points -- so you could earn points for free and then use them in an auction setting to bid (again, for free) on the things you really want. The auctions can be found under Free Prizes in our sidebar. We've recently made some additions to this interface that allow you to monitor your placement in auctions and to "watch" auctions you're interested in -- such as pending auctions, so that you're ready for when they open. If you're not already a member, sign up now and we'll award you 2,500 MyStar Points just to get you started. To our international visitors (living outside the United States), until recently we have mailed prizes all over the world. However, as of last month, we discontinued this practice. Due to the state of the worldwide economy, postal services around the world are imposing VAT taxes on the prizes we ship overseas; these fees are calculated by your local post office and many visitors did not want to pay these fees, causing the items to be returned to us.
We hadn't any control, or even notice, over these VAT taxes, but in order to prevent this problem from escalating, we felt it was prudent to discontinue overseas shipping until things settle down again. We don't expect this to be a permanent situation, but you should know that, for now, you will not be able to participate in our auctions. If you have a friend or relative in the United States, let us know because we can ship prizes there instead. (The Twilight Saga New Moon Twitter Contest is open to international visitors.)
