In today's Twilight Saga Daily Dosage, we're going to discuss Catherine Hardwicke's recent interview with Austin360. She talks about her role as a director and why she turned down The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009). I must admit, I found much of what she had to say in this interview cloaked in a web of smokescreen and mirrors. She's saving face while poking blame at others and that's never an admiral quality...
Over at Austin360.com, Catherine Hardwicke takes a stab at Summit Entertainment without ever using their name. I guess it's easier to attack a company when you just call it "the studio." She states she turned down directing New Moon because she needed more time to prepare. She also complains about not having any work ahead of her. Well, I guess she has some time on her hands now. :-) I don't mean to sound so critical of Catherine, but it's hard not to be when you can read right through her words!
Catherine has done some great work as a production designer, helping to bring such great movies as Antitrust and Tank Girl to the big screen. In fact, she's worked on dozens and dozens of movies as a production designer; no doubt, she has the ability to contribute to the movie industry without always being a director. Her reason for being out of work: "I had never thought there was a gender bias so much, but now I know there is."
Okay, Catherine, I think you're forgetting your roots. Donna Reed was an uncredited director and producer of The Donna Reed Show, and we're going back more than half a century. Fifty years! You don't get to direct (and be credited for) a movie like Twilight (2008) unless we've clearly made some progress in this country, and I doubt very much that your gender has anything to do with you being out of work; perhaps you're just a better production designer than you are a director!
