It's hard to believe that it's been five years already since The Jonas Brothers first rode their charm, good looks and catchy power pop to stardom. The Jersey boys have toured the world, starred in a couple of movies, including a concert film and Camp Rock (2008), released several blockbuster albums, seen their faces plastered on an endless array of products, headlined their own TV show, and more. These days, they're still insanely popular, maturing before our eyes -- Kevin got married, Nick got tall -- and continuing to come into their own as performers. The brothers recently made a pit stop in New York City to promote their latest projects, which include Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010), which will air September 3 on the Disney Channel, and an accompanying Camp Rock 2 tour that finds them joined by Demi Lovato (as their opening act) and several other Camp Rock 2 friends, including Alyson Stoner and Matthew "Mdot" Finley. PopStar was on hand when Nick, Joe and Kevin sat down for a roundtable interview with a small contingent of journalists.
Everyone's favorite "bonus" Jonas, Frankie, has a small role in Camp Rock 2. Do you think he's got a future in the business if he wants one?
Kevin: He's incredible. It was so much fun. I got to work with him a lot in this movie because I was working with the junior rockers. He just really started to shine through. I definitely think he has a future in this business. I also think it's something he wants to do. It's nothing that we're forcing him to do or pushing on to him. It's something he actually has a passion for, which is incredible.
What was your reaction when the Disney Channel said they wanted to do a Camp Rock sequel? Were you into it? Did it take a little arm twisting, considering how busy you guys had become with Jonas LA (TV) and recording and side bands and all of that?
Nick: I think a lot of different things ran through our minds. We were excited about the opportunity. We were excited to be asked to do another one, but also we were interested to see how it'd all roll out. It had been a while since we'd shot the first one. So, we all got to Canada with the mindset that we wanted to make it the best it could be and hopefully come out with a product we're all happy with.
How bittersweet has this period been for you, Joe? You dated Demi Lovato for a while, broke up, and now you've got to tour and promote the movie with her...
Joe: Bittersweet. Me and Demi, we've been friends for a long time. We actually first met when she auditioned for our show JONAS (TV) many years ago. So we all met her at the same time. And it was a lot of fun (to do Camp Rock 2).
Meanwhile, Kevin, you've gotten married. Has your wife Danielle been with you as you've been doing this tour?
Kevin: She's on the road with us and she's having a great time. It's really nice being together. It's going amazing. It's cool. We have a little family on the road. It's really, really awesome. I love it.
How about you guys? Joe, Nick, what's it been like to have Danielle along for the ride?
Joe: It's great. We've been loving it.
Nick: We told Danielle the other day that she's made a great addition to the group. Obviously, traveling with a girl, we didn't know what it'd be like, but, for us, we've had a lot of fun with her.
It's been a few years now since The Jonas Brothers came onto the scene. Looking at what's happened so far, what's it been like for you? Has your audience changed? Have you guys changed? And, peeking into the future, as you and your audience grow up, will you need to mix things up further?
Joe: I don't think we change our audience, but I think our sound changes every record. Musically, I think, we're always changing and we discover new music that inspires us differently. So I think that as we get older the music we listen to changes here and there (and that influences the Jonas Brothers' music).
Kevin: We saw girls last night (at a show in New Jersey) that were at our first show and they've been our fans for the longest time. Now they're all seniors in college. Our fans have gotten much older and it's incredible to see that our audience is still growing and still continuing to be (fans). They're growing up and so are we and so is our music. And we're just having a good time with it.
