Move over, Donatella Versace. Make room, Donna Karan.
Madonna has entered the building.
The pop diva/ actress, and self-marketing guru has decided to invade the world of fashion design. In a recent press release, Madonna announced that she is teaming up with Iconix Brand Group, the company behind labels like Candies and Badgley Mischka, to launch her own fashion line called MG Icon.
"Joining forces with Iconix to bring my fashion ideas to consumers is very exciting for me," Madonna said in the press release. Item one on the agenda is a junior fashion line that will aptly be called Material Girl. The collection will be available exclusively at Macy's department store, and on their website, in August of 2010.
Madonna enlisted the help of her daughter Lourdes when designing the collection, which includes apparel, footwear, handbags, and jewelry, all ranging in price from $12.00 to $40.00. She plans to add beauty and fragrance items to the line some time next year.
The move into fashion seems to be a natural, almost inevitable transition for Madonna. From the earliest point in her career, she was a fashion trail-blazer with an ability to set trends amongst an entire 80's teen generation. The fact that this style icon now wants to capitalize on another of her creative talents should come as no surprise. Madonna, afterall, has never shied away from diversity or publicity.
And this one wins her both.
