Exclusive Interview: Matt Goss

The British musical prodigy Matt Goss is heading for the bright lights of Las Vegas beginning this September 4th.   The singing sensation who captivated audiences for decades overseas is taking up residence at the Palms Hotel & Casino.  Matt Goss is ready to take America by storm this September with his new Vegas show and the release of his new album Gossy, due out on the 15th.  The uber confident and down-to-earth singer/songwriter spoke with PopStar about his new album, his super top secret jewelry line, his dedication to his fans, and his can't miss Vegas show.

Matt Goss oozes confidence and more importantly has the talent and the experience to back it up.  Holding court as heartthrob in the smash hit British band Bros, Goss has spent a lifetime on stage pouring heart and soul into his music and redefining his sound along the way.  Never afraid to take chances and always ready to push the envelope, this bonifide star is ready to do something that hasn't been done in over thirty years.

The amiable singer is about to bring back an era that went out swinging decades ago; he is doing it with his undeniable style,  his sultry beats, and that certain pizzazz that makes Goss a worldwide phenomenon.  The essence of the Rat Pack had a big influence on Goss when he was designing his Vegas show and recording his new album.  Attending a Matt Goss show in Vegas is not dissimilar to traveling back in time to catch Frank Sinatra at the Sands in '66.  It's sexy, classy, and the energy within the Gossy Room will enliven the forgotten lifestyle.  Take a journey back in time, when life was easy, the music was exhilarating, and the swagger of confidence spread widely throughout.

PopStar:  Can you tell us about your new show at the Palms every Friday and Saturday night beginning September 4th?
Matt Goss:  We have done most of the auditions, we have the ten piece band, and we've got four really sexy dancers.  We are right in the thick of rehearsals right now.  I am also the musical director so it's an intense amount of work but it's a lot of fun.  I am building the show with Robin Antin, who created the Pussycat Dolls; we are building the show from the ground up.  It has been going really well.

PopStar:  Sounds like you have many jobs; how is everything going?
Matt Goss:  I have been doing this a long time, it's coming together beautifully, and everyone is having a good time.  It is exciting to see everyone starting to talk about the show; lots of interviews, lots of TV out here, and there are billboards everywhere.  The excitement is definitely building.

PopStar:  Do you ever get nervous?
Matt Goss:  The funny thing is I have played everywhere from Carnie Hall to Madison Square, but this is probably the most nervous I have ever been because this is the first time in several years that I am playing to an audience that doesn't know me.  It is based on pure performances and ability, so I am nervous but it is kinda refreshing.  If you're not nervous you mind as well quit.  I am definitely nervous about opening night and probably the night after that because we have a big red carpet on the 12th.  I am glad I am nervous because it keeps me on my toes.

PopStar:  Sounds amazing, can you tell us about the show?
Matt Goss:  I wanted to create a show that isn't hokey.  I want it to be an old speakeasy club; you go in and you see sexy women, fantastic music, and pretty people, socialize, and have a laugh.  The name of the room [at the Palms] is actually called the Gossy Room.  They have renamed the room; I want people to feel that it is the best hang in Vegas over the weekend.   No flip flops at our show; we want people to dress up, a bit like the movie Swingers.

PopStar:  Do you plan on channeling that same vibe from your new music video EVIL?
Matt Goss:  Exactly that!  You don't have to come all spiffed up; you can definitely have an edge and be funky.

PopStar: Your new album titled Gossy is due out September 15th.  Can you tell us what we can expect from Gossy?
Matt Goss:  It's going to have around 15 tracks.  It's very eclectic; it's not just one sound.  I never really do albums with just one linear beat; a lot of albums these days have one kinda beat and the same melody throughout it.  Each song is genuinely written, I wrote every song genuinely from a place in my body.  Whether it be from my heart, my mind, or combined; every song is about something that happened to me or inspired me.  There is a song about my granddad, there are a few love and hate songs on the album, it's very eclectic.

PopStar:  What music will you be using in your show; songs from the album or maybe some old school hits?
Matt Goss:  I don't really want to go too far into my odld hits because America doesn't remember my old hits, so it's going to be a lot of the new album and a few well-known classic covers.  The songs are going to be really fresh; everything I am doing has new arrangement and a lot of edge to it.  It is going to be very similar to the music video.  The show is going to be dark and sexy like a speakeasy club; when you go in, we want you to feel like you are going into some secret club.  It's going to be full on in your face for a good hour.

PopStar:  Are you ready for the spotlight again?
Matt Goss:  For me, it is all I have known for a long, long time.  Three years ago I played to 100,000 in Hyde Park at a festival with Avril Lavigne and Lenny Kravitz.  I did nine shows at Wembley Stadium with Mariah Carey, so it is all really recent and it is all I know.  It's not about ego; I just want to connect with America.  I am really looking forward to connecting with American audiences like I have done with the rest of the world.  It is something that I have wanted to do for a very long time.

PopStar:  Switching gears, can you tell us what you like to do in your spare time?
Matt Goss:  I paint and draw a lot.  I also meditate a lot to get myself focused.  The funny thing is, my partner, we are in business doing a jewelry line.  It is the most beautiful thing; we actually don't tell people what it's called unless you own a piece.   We have about forty or fifty people who have pieces of ours; and we have asked nobody to tell the name of the line.  I have a tattoo on my left armed called demark, it has a meaning and when you get the piece of jewelry you get to find out the meaning.  We have asked that nobody tell the name unless you see someone with another piece.  So far, nobody has let the secret out.  It is a cool way to see how people are with discretion.  The jewelry I wear is done by us and it is all done with master jewelry quality, it is really beautiful stuff.  It is a secret society!

PopStar:  On your website MattGossOfficial you have a tab for Style Tips.  You have such a great style, do you plan to share?
Matt Goss:  I wanna do stuff that people can use on a very low budget and a very high budget.  I want to do the full spectrum; the affordable stuff and stuff that you can aspire to, things you can put on your wish list.  I will be doing everything from clothes, to watches to cars.  I am a car nut, I have an Aston Martin, and the car in the EVIL video is my car.

PopStar:  Can you tell us about your book Bear Crimbo?
Matt Goss:  Just because of the show and other things going on I just literally recently decided to push the book back to next Christmas.  They wanted to do a full book tour and I just don't have time to do a full national book tour.  I am sorry guys!

PopStar:  Your twin brother Luke Goss has made a name for himself in Hollywood; is acting something you would want to pursue in the future?
Matt Goss:  I started off as an actor when I was young.  My brother is a phenomenal actor; he was in Hell Boy 11.  I must say, lately I have asked to be considered in a few things and I am curious.  I definitely have an interest in acting.

PopStar:  Are you on Twitter?
Matt Goss:  I am bit of a virgin on Twitter.  It gets you; it's insane how instant it is.  I really love it.  I was on the red carpet with Demi Moore and she is a Twitter guru.  She knows everything; how to send pictures and how to send video.  I felt like I was a caveman standing next to her.  I just literally just started but I really like it.

PopStar:  It was very refreshing to read your fan comments on MattGoss.biz they seem to truly admire you.  Thoughts?
Matt Goss:  My fans have been with me for so long and I am starting to see new fans come on board.  It is always an amazing feeling for me when I go into a new territory and see new fans.  For me, it is really what motivates me.  The music is the engine but the only reason you want to start the engine is because of the fans.  They keep you motivated; my fans have such a lovely way about them.  They like the eclectic music, they love the lyrics concept, and I genuinely couldn't do it without them.

PopStar:  Message to the fans.
Matt Goss:  I send my love to everyone.  Thank you for all the messages and the support; it means so much to me.  It has been real fun connecting with the American fans and it has been something I've wanted to do for a long time.  I'll see you in Vegas starting on September 4th, check out my single EVIL on iTunes and the album on September 15th.
