PopStar spoke with the brilliant Polly Scattergood about her self-titled debut album, her musical influences, and her plans for an American tour!
PopStar: You must get this question a million times but we have to ask. Can you tell us about your last name Scattergood; is it a family name and does it have any meaning?
Polly Scattergood: Yes it is. Well apparently it means here today gone tomorrow but I don't think that's a good thing.
PopStar: Do you have any strong musical influences that have helped mold you as a musician?
Polly Scattergood: I like things with strong melodies and good lyrics. I was brought up listening to music by Joni Mitchell, Lenny Cohen; when I was a teenager I got into the songwriters like Alanis Morissette and these days I have an electrical taste, anyone from Milow to Lenny Cohen.
PopStar: Speaking of lyrics, I've read that you write all your music. Can you tell us about how you go about that and where you feel most creative?
Polly Scattergood: Writing music is my main love, it is the one thing I don't think I could live without; it is like my air. I write all the time and I suppose my calm space for writing is my flat. I live in a flat in London in the attic of a house that has a piano in it and that is where I do a lot of my writing. I find that songs come into my head at really odd times; sometimes when I am driving my car and oftentimes when I am doing things that don't involve thinking and suddenly something pops into my head.
PopStar: Do you think that your songs change from when you write them to when they appear on your CD?
Polly Scattergood: I think they change quite a lot. When they first come out of my head and onto the paper, I tend to write the skeletons of the songs on piano. And when I go into the studio it's like going into a big toy box where I can throw all the toys around and mess around and see what happens. For me, it was taking the skeletons into the studio and hanging them onto their bones.
PopStar: You music has such spunk and creativity infused in each lyric. Where does all that energy come from?
Polly Scattergood: I don't have a clue! I write just these little songs and they are what they are. I think that each one has its own personality and I try not to think too much when I am writing. I never think that anyone is going to hear them and I just write them for myself. They are what they are and some of them are random and sometimes I try to push the boundaries. I don't think that there should be any rules and therefore a lot of my songs are out of time and stuff.
PopStar: Are most of your songs autobiographical?
Polly Scattergood: They are semi-autobiographical. There is also an element that I am a song writer and story teller so it's not all completely autobiographical.
PopStar: Do you feel that one musical genre infolded you over another?
Polly Scattergood: It is difficult because I don't think that there is one that I can choose that has influenced more. There are certain bands like Portishead that have influenced me; I was listening to them quite a lot while I was making the album. I don't think it would be fair to pick a genre because I don't really have one because I leap from one genre to the other.
PopStar: I read that you once said, "Music doesn't have to be loud to make an impact." Can you tell us what that means to you?
Polly Scattergood: I really love layers and textures. The way I went about making the album was starting with the skeletons of the song and building out these layers and textures and making the music speak as loudly as the words that I was saying.
PopStar: We are patiently waiting for you to come to the States to tour, will this happen soon?
Polly Scattergood: We are working on some tour dates as we speak.
PopStar: Are there any specific venues or cities that you would like perform at when you come overseas?
Polly Scattergood: You know I have never been to America. The closest I have ever been was when I touched down in Newark for about an hour while in transit to Costa Rica. People keep emailing different places they think I should play so I am thinking I will email them to my manager and see what he can do [laughs].
PopStar: What is your favorite venue to play at home?
Polly Scattergood: As a musician, I personally like the small venues where you can build up a rapport with your audience. For me the audiences are as much a part of the live show as the band. With the little venues you can hear everyone involved. It may be a little more of a nerve racking experience but I prefer smaller venues.
PopStar: I read that you suffered from stage fright. Do you want to tell us about it?
Polly Scattergood: I get really terrible stage fright but I can deal with it now. I was finding it really difficult; I was really scared that I was going to be a complete failure in front of everyone. But then I learned that it was okay to make mistakes because that was the point of live music. I still get the nervous feeling but I don't have the crippling stage fright.

PopStar: You have such a positive and cheery voice; have you ever thought about writing a book?
Polly Scattergood: I never thought about writing a book but I love the MySpace blogs. I treat them as an online sketch book and I love writing random things.
PopStar: We know you MySpace, but do you tweet and Facebook?
Polly Scattergood: I'm on them all.
PopStar: Message to the fans.
Polly Scattergood: I can’t wait to come over to America and see things from your side of the pond.
