Exclusive Interview: Hugh Dillon

It takes a strong man to resist past temptations but that is what Hugh Dillon does on a daily basis.  Fifteen years ago Hugh Dillon was the lead singer of The Headstones the hottest and most successful band in Canada during the 1990's.

Hugh was known for his wild on stage behavior and his wiliness to give into the demons that accompany the rock star lifestyle.  Pushing through the dark times Dillon came out on top and is currently starring in Flashpoint the hottest crime drama on television.

The native Canadian was pushed into acting in 1995 when director Bruce McDonald cast him in his film Dance Me Outside.  McDonald showcased the raw talent that Dillon had and many people took notice.  This film opened more doors for Dillon and allowed him a chance to temporarily move away from the madness that became his life to a new career in acting.

Now a seasoned actor, Hugh Dillon stars in Flashpoint, the hottest police drama on CBS and this coming September, the award winning Canadian show Durham County featuring Dillon will be coming to the States.   PopStar spoke with the Canadian actor/musician who talked about his acting career, his music, his troubled past and his bright future.

 Hugh Dillon Interview

PopStar:  You have overcome so much in your life; do you ever think that you would write a book about your experiences?
Hugh Dillon: I have thought about it but the part where you have to protect other people's identities is very important to me.  There are too many other people involved and I don’t think it would be fair to everyone else.

PopStar:  We hear that you have an new album coming out soon.  What can you tell us?
Hugh Dillon: I am recording some new songs while I am in LA with a friend of mine.  The new album will come out in September and it will be called After Dark.

PopStar:  What can we expect to hear from After Dark?
Hugh Dillon:  If anyone wants to hear it ahead of time they can go to my website HughDillon.com.  One of the songs is actually the one I wrote for the Flashpoint episode called "Never Kissed a Girl" and you can hear it in it's entirety on my website.  If you like that, you can move on to the rest of the record.

PopStar:  Do you think that your sound has transformed throughout the years?
Hugh Dillon: I don’t think so because it comes about so naturally for me.  I have always written songs; it is something I have done my whole life.  It is the one thing that I have never had to think [about]; I do it naturally and don’t worry about what people think and that works well for me.

PopStar:  Throughout the past few years you have been getting some amazing press through the US and Canada.  Does that ever change you or affect you?
Hugh Dillon: What it comes down to is having kind and genuine people around you that encourage you.  That is really where it begins and ends; I have been really lucky and have had some great breaks.

PopStar:  Does it every get old when people want to talk about your troubled past?
Hugh Dillon: There are ways to look at it.  The biggest thing for me is I know that it is there and I don’t run away from it.

PopStar:  Can you tell us about your character you play the CBS hit drama Flashpoint.
Hugh Dillon: Ed Lane is a very driven individual who intends to do the right thing at all cost and expects everyone else to do the same thing.  He has a very intense relationship with Enrico Colantoni and I think that they are the yin and the yang of the police task force.  Sometimes my character can be too driven and Parker has to pull him back.  The writing is fresh and exciting and it is a great show, week in and week out; the stories just get better and better.

PopStar:  On Flashpoint you deal with such heavy topics, do you ever get to have fun on set?
Hugh Dillon: When you first read the script you are like 'oh man that is heavy' but the flip side of that once we are out in the field shooting it is a lot of fun.  All of the guys are hysterical.  They are such a fun group of people to hang out with sometimes we forget that this is serious show.  We could not ask for a better work environment.

PopStar:  The Canadian hit show Durham County which has won over 11 Gemini is coming to the States this September on ION Television.  What can we expect to see in this award winning show?
Hugh Dillon:  It is an incredibly dark piece of film making.   It is a riveting story that deals with a homicide cop that comes back to his hometown and discovers his childhood friend is a serial killer.  It is a very dark and disturbing no holds barred type of show however it is very compelling.  It is one of those shows that are so addicting you will be hooked from the first frame.  It is like watching a great feature film that is finely crafted.

PopStar:  You have worked on a lot of dramas; would you ever consider doing comedy?
Hugh Dillon:   You know what I would love to but it just has not come up.  I did a movie years ago called Hard Core Logo that Quentin Tarantino picked up and distributed with Rolling Thunder.  It had some funny candid pieces in it.  I have always been interested in getting back to comedy but the opportunity hasn't come up yet.

PopStar:  What is the best way for fans to connect and stay in touch with you and your music?
Hugh Dillon:   HughDillion.com gives people a good overview of what I am doing plus you can get some free music.

PopStar:  Do you Twitter, Facebook or MySpace?
Hugh Dillon:   It sounds pathetic but I haven't had time to do any of that stuff.  I have been on set for the last three months and I am lucky that I can text.  Plus it is like being in school on set because if the director catches you with your BlackBerry, you're toast!

PopStar: Message to the fans.
Hugh Dillon:   I could not be happier that so many people are moved by Flashpoint.  I am very grateful and thankful that some many people have taken the time to spend time with it.  Thank you so much!

Make sure to tune into CBS every Friday night at 9pm to catch Hugh Dillon and the rest of the police task force on the hit show Flashpoint.  If you want to learn more about Hugh and check out some of his amazing music from Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir visit his website at HughDillion.com
